Hi people, just got back from the Internet Worl conference in London and
I thought I'd share it with you all..
The show was brillinat, an education, I'm beginning to realise
the scale of networking I should be involved in. The main exhibitors
were the UK providers, but the people I met made a mucher greater
impression then the stands.
I'd made up a few fliers for the Ecafe, and wrangled myself into
the place with a 'Mr Mark Cheverton of the Electronic Cafe' badge :). Demon
nicley let me put a stack of leaflets on their stand and from then on I
spent 7 hours talking.
Interesting people I met...
A guy who is The Metaverse Corporation. He wants to set up _the_
UK MUD, for both commercial and user access, user access being free and
the thing funded by the buisinesses. He's inspired by the io.com metaverse
but is rewriting the code from scratch using a team of american coders.
He's interested in schemes like mine to getway people into his MUD and
create a virtual Cafe to mirror the real one. Very interesting guy.
The London student radio - theyre setting up a BBS in parallel
with their broadcasts to explore the area of music and the internet. Lots
of simulateous events making use of the Inet and Radio as a synergy. The
BBS will have several doors to other systems and they want to contract
people to be on the other end. The setup would be - I get loads
of advertisment on the radio and through the BBS and users connect through
their door and buy an account on my system - I pay them back a fraction
from each account. This is major good - should boost my user base
considerably.
Met a journalist from Austrlia whos bought up a stack of the new
BT video phones and wants to set up a UK <-> AU link evolving into a
cafe/video/art thing. Very cool person.
The PR man behind the conference. Gave me lots of help wrt buisiness
plans/money sources/networking/contacts. Liked my idea and will pass fliers
on to 'friends with money'.
More journalists than I can count. My AU friend got me into the
press section (pays to know people :) and you wouldnt believe the number of
people wanting to do Inet articles. Half of them are clueless and have
just been sent by their editor to do 'a story about that internet thing'.
Hopefully my name is spreading.
Met a guy who is setting up an Ecity in the UK in collaberation with
the ICA (you may bhave seen the stuff on the Web recently). Very nice idea
similar to metaverse in concept except lots of publishing/music/art/
collaboration projects flying around.
Distributed over 40 leaflets about the Ecafe.
Guy who writes the W3 Inet magazine wants me to write an article
about the Ecafe for it.
I'm phased by it all - I'm in love with networking. People just
coming up to you from respectable buisinesses and wanting to know what
you're up to. I've been recommended a catalogue of all conference events
and you can bet I'll be down there for more - its a _great_ way to meet
people with money and on the fringe.
My exams are a bad memory in two weeks, and then I hit the phones
hard. I'll keep you up to date with developments.
-Mark
